Ensuring accessible and affordable housing options for all life stages
Affordable and accessible housing is a challenge for many across the Lower Mainland, and we’re not immune here on the North Shore. The cost to purchase a home is high, and rental vacancy rates remain low. We can’t expand our city boundaries, so we must be innovative in how we use the land we have, to look beyond the single-family home and explore other housing options that work for our community.
Providing affordable and accessible housing is important to me and critical to ensuring a healthy, well-rounded community. From young people looking to enter the housing market, to growing families, and for seniors wanting to downsize and remain in the community they love, we must ensure appropriate housing choices for all life stages.
And, we’re making progress. During my last term, I supported zoning changes to allow both a secondary suite and coach house on single-family lots. The benefits are many. This increases our city’s rental stock as well as options for renters. Homeowners have more options as well, allowing for multi-generational living or renting out the additional suites for extra income.
We will also increase our rental stock with the construction of five new, rental-only apartment buildings in the Lonsdale corridor, with 10 per cent of the units renting for below market value.
Moodyville is another great example of a compact, family-friendly community that will provide a variety of housing options, complete with open park space, walkways to encourage pedestrian use, and close access to the Spirit Trail, Lower Lonsdale, and public transit. Some of these townhomes will also have secondary suites, providing owners with additional income.
These are just a few examples of how we are making progress. I will continue to be a strong advocate as we work to find creative solutions to the affordable housing challenge here in North Vancouver.
