Managing traffic, reducing congestion
Heavy traffic and congestion seem to dominate the news these days. And, I understand the frustration. Travelling across the North Shore at peak travel times can be a nightmare. The reasons for increased traffic are many – more vehicles per household, people commuting to the North Shore to work, connect with the ferry, or travelling through to Squamish and Whistler. There seems to be more cars on our roadways than ever before.

The answer to this complex problem may seem out of reach but, together with Council and staff, I am pushing towards innovative solutions that work for our community. It’s not a quick fix, however we are making steady progress. A good start is the Province’s $200M Highway 1 Interchange Improvement Project in the Lower Lynn area. With an expected completion of 2021, this should improve traffic movement heading towards Ironworkers Memorial Bridge.

I am supporting a variety of initiatives to create a more walkable city, making it easier for residents to leave their cars at home and walk, bike, or take public transit to their destination. I was a strong supporter for completion of the Green Necklace – the paved pathway that circles our Lonsdale business corridor.

Our council needs to keep traffic concerns at the forefront as we make decisions on other issues, such as construction, density, and infrastructure. We must continue to work closely with TransLink to secure efficient public transit – especially east/west across the North Shore and a dedicated line from the Quay to the top of Lonsdale. I also support ride sharing solutions and will work with our waterfront industries to explore a form of car-pooling for their employees.

We have much work to do and I am committed to working with Council, staff, neighbouring municipalities, and other levels of government to ensure workable, cost-effective solutions for our community.
